Achieving World Class AMIS maintenance rating

Result: The external audits were performed annually showing continual improvements in all areas. In 2001 a World Class rating was achieved when the 75% score was exceeded.

Site: A tablet and capsule manufacture and packaging site in southern England with maintenance teams totalling approximately 35 technicians and craftspeople.

When: 1997 - 2001

Background: The engineering maintenance operation had become disjointed and expensive. Cost savings and better performance were necessary. An initial AMIS audit gave a score of 47% and revealed a number of areas that required improvement: reliability, stores, planning and scheduling. I had a direct responsibility in many of these areas and indirect influence in others.

Solution: Funding was gained for: a major stores revamp,  creation of a planning and scheduling group, creation of fully written maintenance regimes from FMECA analyses of the plant and equipment.

Action: Over the next few years the programme of improvements were implemented. An AMIS update was performed annually to confirm that the implementation was achieving improvements.
